Roughly one order in five carries an engraving. Dates, coordinates, a line of handwriting, initials, a phrase that only two people understand. It is the part of the job we like most, and at the moment we do not charge for it.
How to send us your text
It goes on the product page, not at checkout. That is the one thing people get wrong.
On any piece we can engrave, you will find Add an engraving just above the Add to cart button. Open it, choose where the text goes, and type it in. It travels with your order, so nothing gets lost between the checkout and the bench.
Some pieces cannot take an engraving, either because there is no flat area wide enough or because the surface would swallow the cut. On those the field simply is not there: bentwood and wood-inlay rings, superconductor bands and ring sets, beaded bracelets, lanyard beads and bead holders, the Time Gear charms, and the dice.
If you want something engraved and cannot see the option, ask us before you order rather than after.
For handwriting, symbols or anything unusual, add what you can to the field and email us the image straight after you order with your order number.
We confirm before anything is forged
Nothing is engraved from a guess, and nothing is engraved from a typo we could have caught.
You will get the layout back to check before we cut. If a date is wrong, or a name is spelled differently to how you meant it, that is the moment to say so.
Please read that confirmation carefully. It is the last point at which anything can change. Once your text is cut into forged steel it cannot be undone, and an engraved piece cannot be returned or refunded unless we made the mistake.
What fits
The field sets a character limit so you can see as you type. Treat it as a starting point.
Inside a ring band
Dates and initials always fit. On a wider band or a larger size there is room for a short phrase.
Cuffs and bracelets
Considerably more room. A full sentence is realistic.
Pens
The clip takes a name or a date; the barrel takes a little more.
Space really depends on band width and ring size. If what you want is longer than the field allows, ask us. We would rather resize the layout with you than shrink the text until it is unreadable.
Handwriting and symbols
Most things are possible, and we will tell you honestly if one is not.
Send a clear photo or scan of the handwriting on white paper and we can reproduce it. Ask about coordinates, soundwaves, fingerprints and symbols before you order.
Things worth knowing
Three that change what you should expect.
- Engraving adds a little time. Build in an extra day or two on top of the usual one to two weeks, especially if we are going back and forth on the layout.
- Deep-etched and heavily textured surfaces take engraving differently to a polished one. We will flag it if your chosen finish affects legibility.
- Engraved pieces are final sale. Because your text makes the piece unsellable to anyone else, it cannot be returned or refunded unless it is faulty or does not match the layout you approved. See the refund policy.
Ask us first if you are unsure whether something will work. We would rather talk it through than cut the wrong thing.
